UnClean When you install the program, you will be given the choice to check a box to have an icon called UnClean on your desktop. To run the program from your programs menu, unclean will be under PC Magazine Utilities. Entering on the unclean icon brings up a list of the entries in your add remove programs list. To uninstall one, just press alt A for the actions menu and enter on change/remove. The programs uninstaller will take over. To delete an entry that you know is no longer valid but has been left over in add remove, enter on delete entry from the actions menu. One additional thing the program has to offer is if you are on a program you can tab to find out more details about the program. For example for winzip, you would find: WinZip Program: C:\PROGRA~1\WINZIP\WINZIP32.EXE Size: 4.14 MB Last used: 10/25/2002 Frequency: rarely (2) Support information: Publisher: WinZip Computing, Inc. About: http://www.winzip.com Version: 8.1 SR-1 (5266) Support: http://www.winzip.com/xsupport.htm Updates: http://www.winzip.com Standard information: Uninstall: "C:\Program Files\WinZip\WINZIP32.EXE" /uninstall Language: English (United States) Location: C:\PROGRA~1\WINZIP\ Key name: (HKLM) WinZip Other information: VersionMajor= '8' VersionMinor= '1' One note, microsoft has confirmed that there is a bug in the registry as far as last used and frequence dates for programs, so that information really isn't useful. And not all programs provide that much detil. But it will also tell you the details of why it can't uninstall a program if the entry is no longer valid. You can save just the list of programs or including the above information to a rtf or text file. But honestly the main appeal of this program to me is for those of you using windows XP is you can use first letter navigation in the list! So no more having to get past all the windows XP hotfix entries to find a program you want to uninstall that starts with a letter greater than W, smile. I install and uninstall a lot of programs on a daily basis trying them out for the list and I think having the unclean icon on my desktop is going to prove very convenient and time saving. One note, be sure to maximize the program when you run it with alt space bar X for best results. Here is the description of the program from PC Magazine: If the install utility for an application has been designed correctly, it put uninstall information into the Registry. This information is used by the Add/Remove Programs applet (ARP) in Windows Control Panel. Modern install utilities store some additional information such as the expected size of the installation, the install date, the publisher's name, a URL for technical support, and more. Unfortunately, the ARP for Windows 95, 98, Me, and NT 4.0 ignores all this information, showing only a list of programs that you can uninstall. Windows 2000 and XP have an updated ARP that displays this new information, but the applet is slow to load and awkward to use. This issue's utility, UnClean 2, replaces the uninstall portion of the ARP with an improved version that provides full and clear access to all available information, and does so for any of the six current Windows platforms. You can also delete an uninstall entry if you discover that it's no longer valid. And of course, you can remove, change, or repair programs in the same way that you can with ARP. UnClean 2 runs under Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP.
