Details of Selected Bulletin Bulletin Type: FAQ Date Posted: 08/15/2003 Product Name: JAWS Version: 5.0 Category: Synthesizer Question: How do I stop Microsoft TTS from mispronouncing Answer: If you use the Microsoft-Text-to-Speech synthesizer for JAWS speech, the abbreviation "PM" is mispronounced as "Page M" in any application, such as Outlook, NotePad, WordPad, etc. This is a Microsoft Text-to-Speech SAPI engine V5.0 issue and also occurs in Narrator for Windows 2000 and XP. You can use the JAWS Dictionary Manager to customize how "PM" or "pm" is pronounced. To change your pronunciation settings: 1. Press INSERT+D to open the JAWS Dictionary Manager 2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the default dictionary file. 3. Activate the ADD button or press ALT+A. 4. In the Actual Word edit box, type "PM". 5. In the Replacement Word edit box, type "pee em". 6. Press ENTER to activate the OK button and exit the Dictionary Manager. Be sure to save your changes when prompted. 7. You may want to repeat steps 1-6 for lower case "pm" as well. JAWS will now say "PM" instead of "Page M." This change should not have any adverse effect on Eloquence.
