Short Description: 

When using SAPI 5 speech synthesizers, JAWS fails to speak lines or blocks of text when using certain voices. 

Problem: 

Symptoms: When using SAPI 5 speech synthesizers, JAWS fails to speak lines or blocks of text when using certain voices. In some cases JAWS may remain completely
silent. 

This issue is related to the way JAWS determines the voice name. JAWS retrieves the voice name from the wrong place. The reason why Microsoft Mary, Sam,
and the other voices work correctly is because, the place where JAWS retrieves the name happens to be identical to the actual name of the voice. This is
not an issue in JAWS 5.0 or higher. 

Solution: 

An updated SAPI5x.jls file has been provided to correct this problem in JAWS 4.51. This has not been tested with JAWS version 4.50. To access and install
this new file: 

1. If you are currently trying to use a SAPI 5 synthesizer with JAWS, switch to a different synthesizer such as a hardware synthesizer or Eloquence by
pressing CTRL+INSERT+S so that the file you are replacing is no longer in use. 
2. Go to 
ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/SAPI5x.zip 
and download the zip file. 
3. Once the file is downloaded, use an decompression utility like WinZip to uncompress the SAPI5x.jls file. Copy the uncompressed SAPI5x.jls file into
the C:\JAWS451 folder. Answer Yes when Windows asks you if you want to overwrite the file. 
4. Open the Jfw.ini file located in C:\JAWS451 and find the section with the heading [Synthesizers]. 
5. Add the following lines to the [Synthesizers] section: 
Synth3Name=Sapi 5 Driver 
Synth3LongName= Sapi 5 for JAWS 
Synth3Driver=sapi5x 
NOTE: Synth# should follow the sequence already present in the Jfw.ini file. For example, if the Jfw.ini file already contains Synth1... and Synth2...
entries, you must add Synth3.... If the Jfw.ini already contains a Synth1... entry, you must add Synth2..., and so on. 
6. Restart JAWS. 
7. Press CTRL+INSERT+S. The SAPI 5 synthesizer for JAWS is now available in the list of speech synthesizers. Select this synthesizer and then press ENTER.
