Alittle history about Blind-Computing.com and the e-mail list.

The e-mail list:

Back in the fall of 2005, I joined the Jaws-users e-mail list.

Later that fall, I was approached by David Ferrin, the list owner, about joining the management team.

I accepted, and since them we have worked very closely on different projects, and ultimately became good friends.

In December of that year, thru the inspiration of David’s ability to successfully manage several lists, I layed the ground-work for a list of my own, using his already proven configuration as a template for my list.

I had been tossing this idea around for awhile, and was driven by the fact that the information I was looking for wasn’t available in a structured list.

So, I launched the blind-computing e-mail list on January 1, 2007 so I would have the benefit of others knowledge about computers, and the oppourtunity to share my knowledge  without wadeing thru topics of no interest to me.

In the near 6 months the list has been in existance, I have come in contact with a lot of good people,

 and learned new things.

This brings us to the present, and the reason for moving the list.

Those who belong to the jaws-users list know the problems that existed at yahoogroups, and now googlegroups.

That is why I have decided to move the list to David’s server along side the jaws-users list.

On Friday, June 15 2007 the Blind-Computing mailing list was moved from it's birthplace at googlegroups.com,

to it's new home at jaws-users.com

This change was made in order to give the membership more control over their personal preferences

for e-mail delivery, and to allow the management teammore efficient handling of management tasks,

not to mention, better assurance that list mail will be delivered in a smooth and timely manner.

Another change that comes with this move is the list ownership.

Effective with the move David Ferrin has become the new list owner.

As some of you already know, David Ferrin owns the jaws-users mailing list and jaws-users.com website.

David and I have been working very closely since he asked me to join the list management team last fall.

We have been working together to bring more programs, tips and tutorials and resources to both:

http://www.blind-computing.com/

and

http://www.jaws-users.com/

I will continue to work in the backgroundand support his decisions concerning list policies,

but will be able to devote more time to researching programs and information for both lists.

David and I share much the same standards and values, and that is why you don’t find the junk postings on these two lists, as you do with many others.

The sole purpose of these lists is to learn, and not be distracted from that goal with irrevelant postings.

What this means for the members:

Now that the transition has been made, members will have more control over their personal preferences for mail delivery,

And list traffic should be more reliable than what was experienced on other list servers.

We have never asked for financial support for what we do, but what we do ask for, is that everyone take advantage of the resources we have made available.

What this means for the management team:

This move should make it easier for the management team to carry out the behind-the-scenes tasks involved in maintaining the list,

Which translates into more time for them to pursue other projects.

I am sure that David will make this list successful, as he has with the other lists he manages.

The website:

I launched the blind-computing website on January 01, 2007, again from the inspiration of David Ferrin.

The website was designed to compliment the e-mail list, and provide a “ one-stop-shop” for blind computer users.

The website wasn’t designed to compete with anyone, or take the place of any other website.

I try to gather as much information, and programs from around the web to make available on this site.

Since it’s launch, the website has grown, and as of the date of this writing, currently occupies 3.0gb of my servers real estate.
